The UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) launched with a spectacular carnival parade on 3 May 2009.
The £7.3 million state-of-the-art building, based in Luton - the home of Europe’s biggest one-day carnival, houses a band training and rehearsal studio, a welding and casting facility and a costume-making workshop. The centre will focus on artists’ professional development, skills and business training in the fields of music, stagecraft, and performance.
UKCCA is also working in partnership with local education providers to develop carnival arts qualifications and will offer summer school courses for children and young people.
Carnival is a unique spectacle bringing millions of people around the world together on city streets every year. Annual attendance figures for the new centre and the Luton International Carnival are expected to reach over 300,000.
