The Time and Tide Bell, a six foot bell that chimes melodies, was installed at the high tide mark on the sea wall at Appledore, Devon on Monday 20 April 2009.
Sculpturer and musician Marcus Vergette used Arts Council funding to create the new bell form, which sounds a number of different notes from one strike. This form has been made possible as a result of recent developments in computer modelling.
As the effect of global warming increases and sea levels rise, the bell will strike more frequently, and as the bell becomes submerged in the rising water, the pitch will vary.
The bell was unveiled on Wednesday 27 May at the launch of the Appledore Visual Arts Festival. It was followed by a showing of Entity, an exhibition by second year Fine Art students from Somerset College, and a fire ceremony by Aboriginal artist and storyteller Noel Butler.
