In January 2009, young people celebrated the opening of First Floor – a brand new creative arts space in the centre of Leeds.
Owned by West Yorkshire Playhouse, First Floor boasts a spacious and flexible performing arts studio, visual arts studio, Green Room, and a large reception and informal meeting area, with all areas fully accessible.
It was made possible by grants of £100,000 from both Arts Council England and The Linbury Trust, with additional funds from the public, trusts and foundations.
Its aim is to engage and inspire vulnerable young people through creative arts such as drama workshops, storytelling, street dance, action painting and environmental art, alongside longer term projects such as a community radio station.
First Floor hopes to empower young people by broadening their horizons, giving them the opportunity to discover and develop new skills, confidence, respect for others, a sense of identity and pride in their achievements.
