Great Expectations at The Watermill Theatre

A terrifying encounter in a fog-laden churchyard changes orphan Pip's life forever. Against the dramatic backdrop of the vast, windswept marshes, Pip struggles to come to terms with his mysterious "great expectations." Haunted by the eccentric Miss Havisham and tormented by his love for the cold-hearted and capricious Estella, Pip's changed fortunes take him to London to become a gentleman. When his benefactor is revealed, a dramatic chain of events unfolds. Dickens' much-loved novel is filled with vividly drawn characters brought to life by acclaimed theatrical adaptor, Neil Bartlett. Great Expectations is directed by Paul Hart who directed Heroes last year at The Watermill and is Associate Director for Propeller. The terrific cast is made up of Kazia Pelka (Maggie in TV's Heartbeat, Hazel Wilding in Coronation Street and DSI Melissa Temple in New Tricks) who makes a return to The Watermill having last appeared in Caste. Also, Jed Aukin (Shared Experience), Emma Beattie (Donmar), Stephen Finegold (Shared Experience, The National Theatre), Russell Layton (Globe, RSC, Salisbury Playhouse) and Thomas Padden (Propellers' Richard III and The Comedy of Errors and John Doyle's Merrily We Roll Along). Up and coming talent Edward Hancock and Mabel Jones will play Pip and Estella.
