Minute Of Listening

Minute of Listening is a creative learning project through which Sound and Music hopes to enable every child in the country to gain access to a huge diversity of music and sound and, for sixty seconds each day, to focus on the richness and enjoyment of the act of listening.

From January to March 2012 over 20,000 children at 70 schools around the UK took part in the pilot for Minute of Listening, experiencing a new minute-long extract of music or sound each day.

You can find out more about the project at www.soundandmusic.org/projects/minute-listening

Richard Barrett: CONSTRUCTION - world premiere performance

Sound and Music supported the world premiere of Richard Barrett's epic, two-hour work CONSTRUCTION at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival on 19 November 2011. We also produced this 20-minute film documenting the performance, with commentary from the composer.

CONSTRUCTION is a momentous piece, based on the confrontation between ‘utopian' societies, in their envisioned perfection, and real ones with their histories of division, upheaval and destruction.

CONSTRUCTION was performed by:

ELISION

Eugene Ughetti, conductor

Deborah Kayser, voice

Ute Wassermann, voice

Carl Rosman, voice

The event was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

CONSTRUCTION was produced by hcmf// and supported by Sound and Music and ELISION with the friendly support of Ernst von Siemens music foundation; also supported by British Council. Research and creative development for CONSTRUCTION has also been assisted through the SIAL Sound Studios of the School of Architecture and Design, RMIT University, Melbourne with funds from the Australian Research Council.

Sound of Fear - John Carpenter talks with Simon Reynolds (Part 1)

Simon Reynolds talks with the Horror Master himself, John Carpenter, about his groundbreaking soundtracks and the music that inspired them.

Carpenter's music for horror classics such as Halloween (1978) and The Fog (1980) were startlingly effective in their simplicity, and brought a new sonic palette to film scoring with their focus on synthesizers. The Carpenter sound has recently been revived by a wave of underground artists inspired by its otherworldly menace.

This interview was made for SaM's Sound of Fear event at the Southbank Centre in September 2011, as part of the Vision Sound and Music Festival.
