Protein Dance

Protein creates dance performances that connect participants and audiences with everyday life. The company, formed in 1997, owes its origins to the Laban dance Conservatoire in London, where founders Luca Silvestrini and Bettina Strickler met. Protein has always involved non-professional performers in its work and early performances involved large, amateur, cross-generational casts.

The company has also developed educational dance packages to give students an appreciation of touring companies and to meet the requirements of the national curriculum for dance and performing arts.

Protein’s performances are inventive, idiosyncratic reappraisals of everyday issues, often in unusual settings. 2002’s Publife, an exploration of booze culture, was toured in pubs across the UK, and 2008’s On Display was performed in Birmingham’s shopping district as part of the International Dance Festival.
