Poet in the City is an expanding charity whose mission is to bring poetry to new audiences through live events and educational funding. Founded in 1998 as a project of the Poetry Society, it enlists corporate sponsors to fund its programmes, such as funding professional poets to visit schools and in so doing inspire a love of poetry amongst new young audiences.
The charity often features eclectic or unusual subject matter in its events to engage hitherto uncharted audiences in poetry as a stimulating and thrilling live artform. Since its foundation, not only has PitC stirred in thousands of children a love of reading, but the charity has also drawn attention to important mental health and emotional behavioural issues.
