A dark comedy about friends you love to hate, and hate to love
Of all his seventy-six plays (so far!), Sir Alan Ayckbourn has frequently said that Joking Apart is one of his favourites.
Played out in the same back garden over a twelve-year period, this painfully funny play explores the unrelenting themes of ageing, jealousy and unrequited love.
Richard and Anthea are the ideal couple. Charming, generous and successful, they can't help but attract loyal and loving friends. Can they?
Is it possible that being friends with such a golden couple can have its downfalls? Could you actually come to loathe such lovable people, especially when they are so... well... 'nice'?
Richard, Anthea and their friends repeatedly gather to relax and compete, both on and off the tennis court, as their private agonies emerge to devastating effect.

"Guys like us that work on the ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place."
John Steinbeck's powerful and gripping masterpiece tells the story of two outsiders in search of the American Dream.
George and his simple-minded friend Lenny have nothing in the world except the clothes on their backs and a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. A place to call home. Armed with nothing but hope, they hatch a plan to leave their life of poverty behind and make a fresh start.
The two men find work on a ranch and life looks good. But their arrival triggers a tragic chain of events which tests their friendship to the ultimate limit.

Diary of a Football Nobody is based on former Notts County player David McVay's hilarious memoir Steak...Diana Ross: Diary of a Football Nobody.
Diary of a Football Nobody is a candid warts-and-all tale of what it was like to play football at Notts County in the 1970s -- a world far removed from the riches and celebrity of the modern game.
This new play is written by acclaimed Nottinghamshire writer William Ivory, whose successes include the screenplay for Made in Dagenham, his TV adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's Women in Love and most recently the BBC One drama Bert and Dickie.
Full of down-to-earth comedy and tales of boozing, bust-ups and the unique style of the legendary Jimmy Sirrel, Diary of a Football Nobody takes audiences on a light-hearted journey to a bygone age of football, marking Notts County's 150th anniversary.
Please note this play contains strong language throughout.
Nottingham Playhouse - 31 August -- 22 September
