Northern Ballet Theatre is a national touring ballet theatre company, based in Leeds. It performs high quality original narrative ballets across the UK and internationally and has strong education and training departments.
Our funding supports its core activities including the development of its education and audience development programmes, paving the way for the organisation’s move into a new, shared building in Leeds.

Northern Ballet Soloist, Dreda Blow, rehearsing a solo from David Nixon's Ondine.
Here she's playing the role of Beatrice, a warrior woman who must vie with the water-sprite Ondine for Brand's affection.

At the end of the 2012 Spring tour Northern Ballet brought back David Nixon's I Got Rhythm, a celebration of Gershwin in Song and Dance. This video features excerpts from the title song performed by Northern Ballet dancers Ben Mitchell and Kevin Poeung.
A wonderful, exuberent and uplifting piece the dances bring to life the simple joys anyone can find through dance.

Filmed at Leeds Grand Theatre in March 2012, this footage from David Nixon's acclaimed production of Madame Butterfly. Performed by Northern Ballet dancers to live music from the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
This footage features Keiko Amemori as Butterfly, Kenneth Tindall as Pinkerton and Martha Leebolt as Kate alongside Northern Ballet dancers bringing this tragic tale to life.
A peek into the rehearsal studios as Northern Ballet dancers were rehearsing one of the numbers from I Got Rhythm, 'Cuban Overture'. We interviewed dancers Martin Bell & Christie Duncan about the piece and they gave insight into the rehearsal process.
The session was led by David Kierce. Music by Gershwin performed by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
Beauty & the Beast, Northern Ballet's newest production, is touring the UK in 2012 following it's triumphant premiere at Leeds Grand Theatre in December 2011.
This video features interviews with dancers and rehearsal footage from Kenneth Tindall's choreographic debut, Project #1.
The work will premiere as part of the Northern Ballet mixed bill, Perpetual Motion, which also features Rhapsody in Blue (from David Nixon's I Got Rhythm), Glass Canon (by Daniel de Andrade to music by Moishe's Bagel) and Perpetuum Mobile (by soon-to-be artistic director of Scottish Ballet, Christopher Hampson).

The piece is part of the Northern Ballet's Perpetual Motion featuring work by David Nixon OBE, Daniel de Andrade, premier dancer Kenneth Tindall and, of course, Christopher. Before Christmas we held a party for our Mini Movers and Moving Minis (classes for children aged 18months - 4years old).
We had loads of fun singing Christmas songs and playing in the bubble machine and then finished the morning off with mince pies and orange juice. Lani and Sharon (both aged 3) had a great time filming these short clips to tell you how they got on!
We have seen a huge improvement in our Minis this term - lots more confidence and rhythm! We can't wait to see everyone again for the start of the spring term in January.
We are taking enrolments now for new students to join us in the New Year.

David Nixon, Artistic Director and Choreographer of Hamlet gives us an insight into his adaptation of Shakespeare's famous tragedy. Talking about his inspiration and ideas for the setting, as well as information about the music, choreography and characters, he explains how all the elements of the production come together to create each powerful performance. Accompanied by footage from rehearsals, David's insight is an interesting and unique chance to hear from the choreographer himself, before or after you see his production of Hamlet.

On Friday 2 September Northern Ballet held it's third annual Ballet on Briggate bringing dance into the heart of the city. Performing on stage were Northern Ballet dancers, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Northern Ballet Academy students, Phoenix Youth Academy students, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD), Kala Sangam and Manasamitra.
The event was compered by Jon Hammond.
