Heiner Goebbels is one of the world's leading and most sought after creative artists. His staged concert pieces are revelatory and unforgettable, a compelling mix of music, samples, gesture, invented instruments (e.g. 'bow chimes' and 'steel cello'), sound design and text, suggesting ideas, moods, stories and flights of imagination.
The UK premiere features the original artists and production team who created this version of Walden in 2006, plus musicians from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.
Inspired by Goebbels' work and Thoreau's writing and ideas, the whole site of mac birmingham will be brought to life during the day, including new music theatre from Birmingham Conservatoire; outdoor folk sets on the Terrace; films in the cinema; visual work exhibited in the 'allotment' gallery spaces; talks and discussions in the Hexagon; writing workshops; and a 'foraging menu' in the café.

In 1995, Pogus Caesar (Director for Windrush Productions) gained exclusive access to the Amsterdam leg of Aaliyah's European tour. As well as capturing live footage of the concert, Aaliyah and her Father agreed to be interviewed by Caesar and, in a series of intimate conversations, they speak openly about her musical influences, achievements, and her hopes and dreams for the future. This film is particularly poignant in the light of her subsequent early demise.
Pogus Caesar's film Aaliyah Live in Amsterdam captures a star in their ascendancy showing an artist at the peak of her career. It provides the viewer with an insight into Aaliyah, and leaves us wondering just how much she would have achieved had her life not been cut so tragically short.
Influenced by an autumn spent under the trees, nature writing and personal stories of letting go, this brave and moving performance is based on the concept of a grief cycle. The Woods is intense and poetic - using narrative and gentle audience engagement to create an immersive experience which takes you deep into the richly textured world of the woods and the imagination.
Film by Chris Keenan.
