12-19s Opera workshop with English Touring Opera

A group of 12-19 year olds got together to write a new opera based on Donizetti's The Siege of Calais, with themes of revenge, love, power, death and betrayal. Working with a professional director, composer and designer, the five day workshop culminated in a performance at the end of the week. A scintillating celebration of the Sixties, featuring the timeless music of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, The Animals, The Searchers, The Kinks; Let's spend the night together, You really got me, Don't let me be misunderstood, Sweets for my sweet, Roll over Beethoven, Doo wah diddy and many more hits all performed live on stage! This stunning new musical premiering at the Hackney Empire is a homage to London in the Swinging Sixties. Carnaby Street is set against the backdrop of London's West End, with its famous clubs, trendy fashions and eccentric characters, in a time of hope and freedom, when the world is changing and anything seems possible. Directed by Bob Tomson (Blood Brothers, Dreamboats and Petticoats) and designed by Matthew Wright (Evita, La Cage Aux Folles), Carnaby Street tells the story of Jude, a working class boy from Liverpool, new in town and armed with nothing but his guitar and his dreams of fame and fortune. This joyous production - packed with over 30 classic hits of the time - follows the highs and lows, the passion and heartbreak, of his journey in pursuit of stardom. Featuring songs by the like of Joseph Shabalala, Dorothy Masuka, Miriam Makeba, and Masekela himself, among many others, the whole show operates like an extravagant jazz gig, with the band taking centre stage and all the players singing and acting around them. There's an incredible take on Ladysmith Black Mambazo's Nomathemba and the music then swings through the cotton fields of the Mississippi and the old gospel of the American South, via Nigeria with Fela Kuti's Languta before returning to South Africa for the finale. Written and directed by James Ngcobo.
