Audiences chose to journey between the squares to see all four dances or enjoy a single one. Each distinctive event was accompanied by the resonant sound of live bells ranging from a single toll to a specially commissioned score by Terry Mann. With its quietly intense style, SQUARE DANCES transformed audiences' perception of these peaceful spaces, heightening the atmosphere and providing powerful yet delicate images. SQUARE DANCES was commissioned and produced by Dance Umbrella in association with Rosemary Lee Projects and Arts Admin. Supported by The Place. Square Dances was sponsored by Bloomberg and the National Lottery Fund. Film by Roswitha Chesher. danceumbrella.co.uk

Lucinda Childs Dance Company - DANCE

Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/danceumbrellauk Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/DanceUmbrella http://www.danceumbrella.co.uk Part of Dance Umbrella 2011. DANCE is a rarely-performed signature work by one of the pillars of the Judson Dance Theater collective, Lucinda Childs, who has not been seen in London since Dance Umbrella 1994. A seminal collaboration emerging out of one of New York's most vibrant artistic periods, this 1979 classic set to music by Philip Glass has been revived with a complete restoration of Sol LeWitt's work on film, which comprises the work's décor. The 11 extraordinary dancers seamlessly interact with the original dancers on film, the effect being "a ghostly duet of mediums in which layered images work wonders with space and volume, weaving a richly detailed theatrical tapestry." (New York Times). The repeated flowing phrases and ethereal nature of the movement, both live and on film, creates an immersive and mesmerising experience for the audience. danceumbrella.co.uk
