Apples and Snakes - Architects of Our Republic

In August 2013, Apples and Snakes presented an explosion of spoken word, films and music in response and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr's historic "I Have a Dream Speech". This extravaganza was the culmination of a wider programme of artist commissions and participation programmes that matched artists with community groups of all ages, to discuss equality, civil liberties and freedom in the present day, the legacy of the speech and the US Civil Rights movement as a whole. The resulting event stood not only as a celebration of this historic event but as a vibrant call to arms for a powerful new generation to stand against inequality and oppression of all kinds in todays society, the electric atmosphere on the day perfectly capturing the spirit of those who had gone before. The live event featured: Commissioned poetry film pieces from AJ McKenna, Conrad Kira, Vanessa Kisuule, Rik Sykes and Deborah Stevenson in collaboration with filmmakers Mellow 9, Anthony Batchelor, Laura Degnan, Misha Vertkin, Chris Keenan. Music commissions from Zena Edwards & Drew Horley and Dizraeli. Films and live performances in the Ballroom from the Architects Young Writers Group, the Elders group and Malika Booker. Apples and Snakes - Shake the Dust - Champions of the Word

SHAKE THE DUST was the biggest youth poetry slam the UK has ever seen. Spread across nine regions of England, teams of young people came together through writing and performing poetry. We used slam poetry as a tool to inspire and motivate young people to share their lives, stories and dreams, and give them a platform from which to speak out. They worked with top spoken word poets from around the UK. The competitive slam events were only one part of the process; more than anything it was about building a community that will be able to look beyond to the future of youth poetry slam in the UK. Shake the Dust joined up nine prominent arts venues in nine regions of England to work in partnership. They formed the regional homes for Shake the Dust through to the Regional Slam Finals. The highest scoring teams from each region progressed through to the National Shake the Dust Weekend, held at Southbank Centre in London in July 2012, including workshops, guest performances, international visitors and the grand slam final. It was an unmissable weekend! "To everyone who has helped to drive this project forward, whether on the stage, backstage, watching the stage, in the office booking trains, organising t-shirts, venues, flyer drops, workshops, writing poems, perfecting poems, the list goes on WELL DONE to everyone!" Laurie Bolger, Poet "Celebrate the voices of these young poets with us. The dust has truly been shaken."
