The Renaissance strategic support fund is the final programme strand of Renaissance to be developed. It aims to address the priorities set out in Culture, knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone and complements our Major partner museum and Museum development investment.
It focuses on any gaps (geographical or otherwise) or development opportunities across the sector recognising that excellence and the potential for excellence can be found in museums of all sizes.
We have committed over £36 million as a result of the first and second funding rounds of the strategic support fund. This includes the negotiation of transitional funds to those museums exiting from a long term funding relationship with Renaissance.
A further £6.1 million is available in the third round for activity that takes place in 2014/15. This is in addition to the £6.4 million already committed for 2014-15 in rounds one and two of the fund. For 2014-15, we expect to see awards of £30,000 to £300,000.
94 projects were commissioned for the 2012/13 grants. Activity for these projects largely finished in March 2013.
For round two of the Strategic support fund we made 87 awards for activity starting in April 2013. Funds were awarded to a wide range of projects across the country. Thirty of these awards were for activity across the two years 2013/14 and 2014/15.
The third round of the Strategic support fund opens on 3 October 2013, for activity that takes place between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2015. In this round, we are anticipating ambitious projects that build on innovation, resilience and sustainability in the museums sector.
The fund will cover areas of work set out in our Guidance for applicants and will support innovation, develop resilience and sustainability, and encourage collaboration within the museums sector in England.
