Do your questions have to be quite so inane?
How many of these 'debates' do you intend to instigate?
Is funding evenly distrubuted between RFO's and community projects in terms of participative arts activity?
Any successful product 'work of art' has to be 'good'. A good product makes money, is this not the case in all commercial ventures. Or are the tax payers' money being used as 'charity' for these big professional art names? I think the well paid 'artists' should not receive charity. All art needs to be good if it is to be respected as a good product.
Who decides what is good? A lot of the time pompous posturing and pretentious bollocks can really frighten tallented young (and older for that matter) people away from artistic experiences and expression that could change their own and possibly many other people's lives for the better.
I thought this debate would be dead and buried by now. Can I clarify that all art is good anyway, the actual act of making art is good, is it not? Whether or not it's farcical or a bloody turner prize winner doesn't mean squat. It is the choice to use artistic expression to escape the banalities of everyday life. Why doen't we start sanctions. If it's not good you can't do it. Is it not already bad enouh that commercialism is ripping the heart out of true vision enough that one has to debate whether it's right or not. Come on get with the program.

I feel shock and dismay most days with issues in life but . . .i can't believe i have just voted for the arts council to decide arts policies! i honestly thought you
would have the insight to safe our country from losing its beauty of culture. Art is a Question . a journey . an inspiration . An understanding.a development. a freedom . a spiritual. a mental . a physical. an expression. a need. a vision . every single person is creative and has a need and a right to be ! A THERAPY. Art is . . . beyond words ! ! perhaps you should rewrite the question to a more positive mind set of an exploratory nature .

On jonathan jones article my opinion is Art is a mirror and what we see and feel is personal and totally individual. for me the Angel of the North. Is a Strong force upstanding the love of the people the men who had to leave their families and home in view of survival, leaving the industry of mining for coal and the ironworks. many like my beautiful Grandpa came down to the Midlands and worked in the Motor factories, Jaguar and Rolls Royce 2 name, where of course aeroplane engines were also produced! the monies earned were sent home to support the large families. The depth of a visual attained through and beyond its surface exterior and material reclaiming a more sensual beauty
Should art be valued instrumentally of for itself?
Should art be valued instrumentally or for its own sake?
Sorry, that's what I meant the first time round
This is a much more entertainable debate. And although I have my own personal view on this, I suppose it would have to depend on the individual. What does one want to acheive by proposing their chosen 'art'. there's also the question of trying to generalise 'art' as some sort of magic bullit, it is so hard to catagorise somthing with such a vast application. However shouldn't one value 'art' both as a tool and for it's own sake. Although it seems much harder to defend art for it's own sake, there is always an ideology that manifests itself under the work, that sometimes is much more influential and effective, as art that states it's intentions before creation.
No. It has to give the person doing it the satisfaction of having something they themselves are happy to have spent their time producing. The experience of making is so rare in the work world these days, but I think it's absolutely essential to human beings's well being. We artists KNOW. We are addicted to that feeling. It's a good addicition and places where that experience is a normal part of life tend to be peaceful places. Our role should be that of pushers for this wonderful experience.
