art05 - 24 February 2005, Liverpool

art05, our second annual event for the arts in the North West in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the BBC, and in association with Liverpool08, European Capital of Culture and aFoundation took place on 24 February at FACT and in the Independent District in Liverpool.
From 10.30 in the morning until well after midnight, in two of the newest arts venues in Liverpool, art05 provided a spotlight on the arts in the North West and a platform for showcasing their strength and diversity. Packed into one full day, it includes the art05 x.change filled with over 70 exhibitors from the region and beyond, and offered a chance for the fastest networking opportunity in the arts! The art05 debate - held in association with the BBC and chaired by Alan Yentob, Director of Creativity, BBC tackled the question “Can you buy culture?” BBC North West Tonight broadcast four short films about the art05 awards finalists in the week of art05.
All tickets for the art05 debate, party and x.change sold out and over 500 people attended the day's events.
art05 climaxed in the evening with the announcement by Tracy Emin of the winners of the two £10,000 art05 awards at the fabulous art05 awards party.
The winners were:
- Individual Category - Eddie Berg
- Organisation Category - Quarantine
The two £10,000 art05 awards will be used by the winners to create or commission new work for public presentation in the North West.
A separate Arts Council England, North West award for a lifetimes contribution to the arts was also presented to John Fox.
We would like to thank aFoundation, Picturehouse at FACT, Royal Northern College of Music and The World of Glass, St Helens for all their help with
art05. Thanks are due also to Maddi Nicholson, Stuart Bastik, Walk the Plank, Dansarota and Pigeon Theatre for their contribution to the art05 artistic programme.
Finally, our thanks to everyone who attended and took part in
art05 and who helped make it a great success for the arts in the North West.
