On 24 April a seminar sponsored by the Arts Council brought together key figures to discuss how the arts and culture make the maximum impact on people and the economy in a downturn, and how they should be supported. The seminar was organised by policy specialists the Centre for Public Policy Seminars.

We sponsored this seminar in order to create an opportunity for arts organisations and practitioners and policy-makers at national, regional and local level to meet and discuss the challenges we face in the current economic climate.

The issues that contributors including Dame Liz Forgan, Sir John Tusa and Cllr Warren Bradley of Liverpool City Council discussed included how to continue to achieve world-class arts and culture throughout the downturn, ensure culture and arts are seen as essential in a recession, and will help to revive the economy and underpin regeneration.
