Jean Nouvel's pavilion

Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and engineered by Arup, this year's pavilion is the 10th in the Serpentine Gallery's architecture series and also coincides with the gallery's 40th anniversary …

Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives.

As the national development agency for the arts, we support a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, carnival to crafts.

Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short, it makes life better.

Between 2008 and 2011 we'll invest in excess of £1.6 billion of public money from the government and the National Lottery to create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country.

Thanks to 15 years of sustained support, including the introduction of the Lottery in 1994, the arts are thriving. We have visionary leaders; entrepreneurial business models; a global reputation for excellence and innovation; enhanced facilities; a transformational Olympics opportunity; and a growing cultural economy built on a new spirit of creative confidence.

Our policies set out the vision of what we want to achieve with the public money we invest.

The members of our national Council are responsible for ensuring that we achieve our objectives.

Our national research programme explores questions across artforms and regions, building collective knowledge and supporting the development of effective policy.

Our mission for the next three years, 10 years and beyond is clear and unequivocal. It is about great art for everyone.

As well as collaborating with local authorities, we try to establish effective partnerships with a range of national, regional and local organisations, both private and public.

We are committed to supporting public engagement. These pages provide information and guidance on reaching and engaging arts audiences.
